Paklenica via Velika Paklenica and Manita peć

For a first introduction without committing the whole day, the Paklarić trail starts near Entrance 1, passes the old mill and climbs to the fortification and viewpoint. Its short route helps connect the landscape with the stone dwellings, livestock farming and old links between the coast and the interior of Velebit. The Pjeskarica trail, beside the Velika Paklenica stream, adds an interpretive walk through karst terrain and sub-Mediterranean vegetation. It is the sensible choice if you want to walk without turning the visit into a long ascent. Even so, natural paths can be uneven: do not assume they are suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs without confirming this directly with the park. Those with more time can continue through the canyon towards Lugarnica and the mountain hut. The change is clear here: this is no longer an introductory walk but a mountain route, with distance, elevation gain and a return time that should be checked on the official map before setting out.

The Manita peć cave is the only cave in the park prepared for guided public visits. From the Velika Paklenica car park, the climb to its entrance takes approximately an hour and a half; the visit inside lasts about half an hour. This means calculating the outward walk, arriving before closing time and allowing for the descent afterwards—not just the time underground. The cave opens only during certain periods and times of year, and visits are organised in groups with park staff. The published calendar varies between April and October; therefore, check the park’s official information before setting out for the opening day, last admission time, entrance supplement and payment method. The temperature inside is around 9°C all year, so a warm layer is useful even on hot days. It is not suitable for anyone needing a short, level or completely flexible route. In that case, it is better to stay in the valley and save Manita peć for another visit.

The Velika Paklenica route runs between huge rock walls towards woodland, Lugarnica and the mountain hut. It best explains the transition from canyon to mountain, but requires hiking footwear, sufficient water and your own turnaround time. Markers and information panels provide guidance, but they do not replace reading the route in advance or making a sensible decision in heat, rain, wind or fatigue. Paklenica has an extensive trail network: some are tourist routes within the canyon, while others climb towards the higher elevations of Velebit. Do not assume that the ease of Paklarić or Pjeskarica applies to these routes. For longer outings, download the available route on the mountain maps recommended by the park and tell someone else your planned itinerary. Stay on marked paths and avoid turning the surroundings into an improvised campsite. The park experience depends on keeping pressure on the soil, seasonal watercourses and underground habitats within sustainable limits.

Starigrad-Paklenica is the logical base for entering through Velika Paklenica, but the visit is better if you do not try to combine the canyon, cave and a summit in just a few hours. A balanced sequence is to arrive early, first walk Paklarić or Pjeskarica to get your bearings, then decide whether to continue inland, and only include Manita peć if the confirmed schedule allows you to make the climb without rushing. The basic entrance fee covers the marked trails; visits to Manita peć and other services are handled separately. Fees, opening times, parking conditions and possible trail restrictions can change: check them on the day or the previous day with Paklenica National Park. Also carry an up-to-date map: phone signal, trail conditions and the weather are not a sufficient basis for planning a mountain route.
