Panjakent

Panjakent is a practical base for visiting Sarazm and the ancient Sogdian city of Panjakent, two archaeological sites from very different periods in the Zeravshan Valley. Both can be planned in one day, but transport, walking conditions and local arrangements require attention.

What makes it special

  • Sarazm preserves evidence of early proto-urban settlement, farming, metallurgy and long-distance exchange.
  • Ancient Panjakent includes a citadel, walls, districts, temples, houses and a necropolis dating from the fifth to eighth centuries.
  • The National Museum of Antiquities in Dushanbe holds paintings from ancient Panjakent and finds from Sarazm.
