Travel decision

Burkina Faso urges postponing all tourism-related travel

The security situation, uncertain mobility and limited assistance make this an unsuitable time to plan tourism in Burkina Faso.

As of 16 September 2026, official advice from several governments reaches the same clear conclusion: postpone all tourism-related travel to Burkina Faso. This is not a matter of adjusting a route, choosing an urban base or booking additional services; the risks of terrorism, kidnapping, violence and travel disruption affect the country as a whole and can change quickly.
01

The practical decision is not to turn the trip into an itinerary

Being able to reach Ouagadougou does not mean that a viable tourist destination is available. Official alerts advise against travel throughout the country and note that the risks also extend to the capital and Bobo-Dioulasso. A flight booking, available accommodation or a local contact should therefore not be interpreted as proof that an independent visit is reasonable. The practical approach is to postpone, not to look for a geographical exception. Parks, reserves, intercity roads and cultural sites should not currently be included in leisure travel plans. Conditions may involve checkpoints, movement restrictions and sudden changes that make a planned route unworkable.
02

What to review if travel is absolutely necessary

Travel for a family, professional or humanitarian reason requires a different assessment from tourism and does not eliminate the risk. Before committing money or dates, confirm the consular advice for your nationality, entry conditions, the actual scope of your medical and evacuation insurance, and your organisation’s or host contact’s ability to change the plan. For travellers holding a US passport, official information indicates a visa suspension announced on 30 December 2025; this is time-sensitive information that must be checked directly before taking any action. Health requirements should also be checked again, including vaccination documents and malaria prevention, through a travel-medicine consultation. These measures help prepare for essential travel, but they do not offset the security risks.
03

If you are already in Burkina Faso, reduce the tourism element

Anyone already in the country should follow the instructions of local authorities and their consular representation, check official alerts frequently and avoid adding unnecessary exposure through visits, excursions or non-essential transfers. Maintain clear communication with your contacts and allow room for changes to transport or accommodation. Decisions about overland journeys, travel at night or medical assistance should not be based on informal information, outdated posts or promises of availability. The priority is to limit non-essential movements and follow the instructions in force that day.
04

When to reconsider the destination

It will make sense to revisit Burkina Faso as a travel project when official advisories stop recommending that all travel be avoided and there are verifiable conditions for travelling with a reasonable degree of independence. That change should be evident in up-to-date consular sources, not just in an isolated news report, a commercial offer or the reopening of an air connection. In the meantime, it is possible to engage with the country through its cinema, languages, textile creations and the work of Burkinabè artists, without presenting that interest as a reason to travel now. Waiting does not diminish the destination’s cultural value; it allows a future visit to be planned with better information and less exposure.
05

Information to verify before changing any plans

Check your government’s travel advice, the relevant diplomatic representation, the entry requirements applicable to your passport, your insurance conditions and official health guidance. These are changeable elements and must be checked again even if you already have flights, a visa or an organised itinerary.
